A Russian attack against the city of Kryvyi Rih in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast on March 12 started a fire in a residential building and five people, said Oleksandr Vilkul, the head of the city's military administration, and other officials.
At least three missile hits were recorded in the city, one of which targeted a nine-story building and another hitting the roof of a five-story building.
Rescue operations concluded at around 10 p.m. local time. Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Governor Serhii Lysak said that 44 people were wounded. At least 20 injured adults and nine children have been hospitalized. A two-month-old boy and an 11-month-old girl are among the youngest patients.
One of the injured died in the hospital overnight. In his update on March 13, Lysak said that the number of injured has risen to 49.
Four wounded are reportedly in serious condition, and nine people have been rescued from the rubble. According to Vilkul, a 47-year-old woman died due to serious injuries in hospital overnight on March 13.
The official said that walls, roofs, windows in residential buildings, and shops had been damaged by the missile attack.
Kryvyi Rih, with a population of around 660,000, is the second most populous city in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. It has suffered multiple deadly attacks by Russian forces since the outbreak of the full-scale war.
The hometown of President Volodymyr Zelensky came under a particularly heavy attack in July 2023, which resulted in six people killed and over 70 injured.
"Every day, our cities and villages are subjected to such attacks. Every day, Ukraine loses people to Russian evil," Zelensky wrote on social media following the March 12 attack.
"And there can be no pause in support for a day, a week—let alone months—when it comes to protecting lives and simply saving people from terror."
